Bill Detail
An Act to prohibit the promotion of alcoholic beverages
This enactment prohibits the promotion of alcoholic beverages, subject to specific exceptions. It also provides a regime for administration and enforcement, associated regulation-making powers, and associated offences and punishments.
Bill S-290, if passed, would prohibit the promotion of alcoholic beverages in Canada. This includes advertising that highlights price, distribution, or associates alcohol with lifestyles like glamour or excitement. The goal is to protect young people and reduce the negative health and social costs associated with alcohol consumption. While most promotion would be banned, exceptions exist for certain artistic works, reports not given payment for mentioning alcohol, or promotions directed only at other alcohol industry businesses. Informational promotions and brand-preference promotions would be allowed under strict conditions, such as being sent directly to named adults or occurring in age-restricted locations.
