Bill Detail
An Act to establish a national strategy to end energy poverty
This enactment requires the Minister of the Environment to develop a national strategy to end energy poverty in Canada. It also provides for regular reporting to Parliament on the implementation of the strategy and for the creation of a council to advise the Minister on the development, implementation and evaluation of the strategy.
This bill, titled "An Act to establish a national strategy to end energy poverty," requires the Minister of the Environment to create a plan to tackle energy poverty across Canada. Energy poverty is defined as a situation where a household struggles to afford or access the energy services needed for basic comfort, health, and participation in society. The strategy will set targets, identify measures for support and energy efficiency, and address the unique needs of vulnerable populations like low-income families, Indigenous Peoples, and those in remote areas.
The bill also mandates regular reporting to Parliament on the strategy's progress and effectiveness. An advisory council will be established to guide the Minister on developing, implementing, and evaluating the strategy. This initiative aims to improve housing, reduce living costs, and support Canada's transition to a net-zero economy by ensuring all Canadians have access to adequate, affordable, and reliable energy.
