Bill Detail
An Act respecting the recognition of wartime service
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework for the recognition of certain military service as wartime service and for the designation by the Governor in Council of military service as wartime service if it meets the objective criteria set out in the national framework.
Bill S-246, the Wartime Service Recognition Act, aims to create a national framework for formally recognizing certain military service as 'wartime service'. This framework will establish clear, objective criteria based on the risks, hardships, and sacrifices faced by Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans during modern conflicts, separate from any benefits or compensation.
The bill ensures this recognition is fair, consistent, and publicly transparent. It will involve consultations with veterans groups, experts, and others. The Minister of National Defence will develop the framework and report on its implementation and effectiveness over time. This initiative seeks to acknowledge the realities of modern military operations and honor the service of those who served Canada.
