This enactment amends the Criminal Code to
Bill C-84 strengthens Canada's animal protection laws by explicitly defining and criminalizing bestiality, which is any sexual contact with an animal. It also expands existing laws against animal fighting by covering the promotion, arrangement, and even the training and breeding of animals for fighting purposes. Furthermore, it broadens the offense related to animal fighting arenas to include any type of location used for such activities.
This bill affects anyone who commits acts of bestiality or engages in organized animal fighting, including those who facilitate, promote, or profit from it. It also introduces stricter penalties, such as mandatory bans on owning animals for repeat offenders, and allows courts to order offenders to pay for the costs of caring for animals rescued due to these offenses.
