Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Competition Act, the Criminal Code and the Inquiries Act
This enactment amends the Competition Act to replace the maximum fine that may be imposed for an offence in relation to competition with a discretionary fine.
It also amends the Criminal Code to extend the meaning of the term “official” for certain purposes and to permit the disclosure of income tax information for certain offences.
Finally, it amends the Inquiries Act to increase the maximum fine that may be imposed for failure to appear before a commissioner.
Bill C-433 proposes to change how penalties are applied under several Canadian laws. It aims to replace fixed maximum fines for competition-related offenses with fines determined by the court's discretion. Additionally, it seeks to broaden the definition of "official" in the Criminal Code to include individuals or their employees contracted by the government to perform government functions. The bill also allows for the disclosure of income tax information for certain offenses and increases the maximum penalty for failing to appear before a commissioner under the Inquiries Act.
