Bill Detail
An Act to establish a national food cooperative strategy
This enactment provides for the development of a national strategy to facilitate the establishment of food cooperatives in Canada. It also sets out reporting requirements respecting the strategy.
Bill C-421 proposes to create a national strategy to help establish food cooperatives across Canada. This bill aims to address rising grocery prices and the dominance of a few large corporations in the Canadian grocery market. It seeks to encourage more competition and consumer choice by supporting community-owned, small, and medium-sized businesses.
The Minister of Industry would be responsible for developing this strategy in consultation with provincial governments, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities. The bill also includes reporting requirements, mandating that the strategy be tabled in Parliament and published online within a specific timeframe after its completion.
