Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Marine Liability Act (national strategy respecting pollution caused by shipping container spills)
This enactment amends the Marine Liability Act to provide for the development and implementation of a national strategy to address pollution caused by shipping container spills.
Bill C-402 proposes to create a national strategy to deal with pollution from shipping container spills. The Minister of Transport would be responsible for developing and implementing this strategy. It includes requirements for an independent study to assess current spill response capabilities, identify gaps, and evaluate potential solutions like compensation funds.
The strategy would focus on prevention, better communication with communities and responders, establishing a joint task force, monitoring lost containers, and funding research on plastic pollution. It aims to ensure Indigenous organizations are consulted and involved in the strategy's development. The bill requires regular reports to Parliament on the strategy's progress.
