Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act (extension of the federal fuel excise tax relief)
This enactment amends the Excise Tax Act to extend the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 31, 2027 and to temporarily set the excise tax rates on fuels to 50% of the regular rates for the period beginning on February 1, 2027 and ending on March 31, 2027.
Bill C-38, also known as the Canadian Fuel Affordability Act, extends the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 31, 2027. This means that the federal tax on gasoline and diesel fuel will continue to be waived for an additional period. After this suspension ends, for a limited time between February 1, 2027, and March 31, 2027, the federal excise tax rates on these fuels will be set at 50% of their regular amounts.
This bill primarily affects Canadian drivers and industries that rely on fuel, such as trucking and aviation. By extending the tax relief and then reducing the rates, the government aims to provide some financial relief and help make fuel more affordable for consumers and businesses during a period of potentially high prices.
