Bill Detail
An Act to establish a national framework to promote the durability of electronic products and essential home appliances
This enactment provides for the development of a national framework on the durability and repairability of electronic products and essential home appliances. It also sets out reporting requirements respecting the framework.
This bill aims to create a national plan to make electronic products and essential home appliances last longer and be easier to fix. It recognizes that Canadians spend a lot of money when these items break too soon, and that we rely on them daily. The goal is to protect consumers, lower household costs, and encourage responsible businesses by setting standards for how long products should work and how they can be repaired.
This national framework will involve setting minimum durability standards, ensuring transparency about a product's lifespan and repair options, and clarifying the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers, and sellers. It also includes provisions for accessible spare parts, maintenance information, and software support where applicable. The Minister of Industry will lead the development of this framework in consultation with provincial governments and consumer groups, with a report expected within 18 months and a review of its effectiveness within five years.
