Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Marine Liability Act (national strategy respecting pollution caused by shipping container spills)
This enactment amends the Marine Liability Act to provide for the development and implementation of a national strategy to address pollution caused by shipping container spills.
Bill C-215 proposes to create a national strategy to deal with pollution from shipping container spills. It would require the Minister of Transport to develop and implement this strategy, ensuring Indigenous organizations have a chance to collaborate. The bill also calls for an independent study to examine current gaps in regulations, salvage capabilities, and pollution prevention measures. The findings of this study would then inform the national strategy.
The strategy would include steps to prevent spills, improve communication with coastal communities and responders, and establish a joint task force. It would also focus on monitoring and removing lost containers and funding research into the environmental impact of plastics and removal techniques. The Minister would be required to report on the strategy and its implementation to Parliament annually.
