This bill, now called the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit Act, aims to increase the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) credit to help Canadians with the cost of groceries and other essentials. For the 2025-2026 benefit year, the maximum annual credit will increase by 50%. Following that, from the 2026-2027 benefit year onwards, the credit will increase by 25% for a period of five years.
This enhanced credit will benefit low and modest-income individuals and families. Special provisions are also included for shared-custody parents to ensure fair distribution of the benefit.
