Bill Detail
An Act to prohibit the promotion of alcoholic beverages
This enactment prohibits the promotion of alcoholic beverages, subject to specific exceptions. It also provides a regime for administration and enforcement, associated regulation-making powers, and associated offences and punishments.
Bill S-203, the Alcoholic Beverage Promotion Prohibition Act, aims to reduce the consumption of alcohol in Canada by restricting how alcoholic beverages can be promoted. The bill proposes to ban most advertising and promotional activities for alcoholic drinks, especially those that might appeal to young people under 18. This includes prohibitions on mentioning price or availability, using endorsements, or associating alcohol brands with exciting lifestyles.
The goal is to protect young people and the general public from being encouraged to drink, thereby improving public health and reducing the societal costs associated with alcohol consumption, such as healthcare expenses and lost productivity. While the bill aims for a broad ban, it does include specific exceptions, such as for certain artistic works or promotions targeted only at other alcohol industry businesses, and allows for informational promotions under strict conditions.
