An Act to amend the Veterans Well-being Act
This enactment amends the Veterans Well-being Act to provide that rehabilitation services provided under the Act include the provision of service dogs to veterans.
Bill C-282, also known as the Service Dogs for Veterans Act, proposes to amend the Veterans Well-being Act. The main goal of this bill is to ensure that rehabilitation services provided to veterans explicitly include the provision of service dogs. This means that when a veteran's rehabilitation plan is developed, the Minister must consider if a service dog is needed to help with their medical or psycho-social rehabilitation needs.
The bill outlines that the Minister can make regulations for the provision of these service dogs. These regulations would cover aspects such as the health requirements for the dogs, their breeding and accessories, the training and testing of both the dogs and their handlers, the certification of training organizations, and the financing of the program. This initiative aims to provide more comprehensive support for veterans' well-being by recognizing the significant role service dogs can play in their recovery and quality of life.
