An Act to provide for the regulation of the online use of deepfakes and for related transparency measures
This enactment enacts the Regulating the Online Use of Deepfakes Act to regulate the online use and dissemination of deepfakes, to increase transparency and to protect individuals and their interests from significant harm. It also establishes an administrative monetary penalties scheme to promote compliance with the Act.
Bill C-277, titled the Regulating the Online Use of Deepfakes Act, aims to protect Canadians from harm caused by realistic, AI-generated fake videos, audio, and images (deepfakes). These deepfakes can be used for fraud, harassment, and identity theft, causing significant emotional, reputational, and financial damage. The bill seeks to address gaps in current laws by requiring online platforms and services to identify, label, and prevent the spread of harmful deepfakes.
