Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Criminal Code (sexual assault material)
This enactment amends the Criminal Code to make it an offence to carry out certain activities in relation to visual recordings depicting non-consensual sexual activity.
Bill C-275 proposes to create new criminal offences related to "sexual assault material," which is defined as explicit and realistic visual recordings of non-consensual sexual activity. The bill would make it illegal for anyone to knowingly create, publish, possess for publication, transmit, distribute, sell, advertise, import, export, or possess such material for these purposes.
Penalties would vary depending on the activity, with stricter penalties for distribution and sale (up to 14 years imprisonment or $100,000 fine) and lesser penalties for mere possession or access (up to 5 years imprisonment or $50,000 fine for possession, and up to 10 years imprisonment or $50,000 fine for access). The bill includes exceptions for legitimate purposes like administration of justice, science, medicine, education, or art.
