This enactment amends the Canada Elections Act to, among other things,
The enactment also enacts a statute to change the name of certain electoral districts as a result of proposals by the members of the House of Commons who represent those electoral districts.
This bill, known as the Strong and Free Elections Act, updates the Canada Elections Act to strengthen the integrity of the electoral process. It introduces new rules and penalties to prevent foreign interference, bribery, and the spread of false information about elections and candidates. The changes also aim to stop people from voting in multiple nomination contests and restrict certain contributions to political entities and third parties, especially from anonymous sources.
Additionally, the Act requires political parties to have policies for protecting personal information and enhances the powers of the Commissioner of Canada Elections to enforce the Act, including higher fines for violations. The bill also enacts a separate measure to rename certain electoral districts based on proposals from Members of Parliament.
