Bill Detail
An Act to establish a national strategy respecting flood and drought forecasting
This enactment provides for the development of a national strategy to provide key stakeholders with the information they need to forecast floods and droughts.
Bill C-241 aims to create a national strategy for forecasting floods and droughts across Canada. Recognizing the increasing damage from extreme weather and climate change, this bill addresses the need for better, coordinated forecasting. Currently, provinces handle forecasting independently with limited federal help, despite the complex models and advanced technology available, including from Canadian universities.
This strategy will assess the need for national coordination, investment, and new technologies, as well as the benefits of developing advanced forecasting models. It will also explore how to improve forecasting for provinces, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and industries like farming and insurance. The goal is to provide better information to help manage the growing risks associated with floods and droughts.
