Bill Detail
An Act to amend the Marine Liability Act (national strategy respecting pollution caused by shipping container spills)
This enactment amends the Marine Liability Act to provide for the development and implementation of a national strategy to address pollution caused by shipping container spills.
This bill, if passed, would require the Minister of Transport to develop and implement a national strategy to deal with pollution from shipping container spills. This strategy would involve studying current gaps in regulations and salvage capabilities, assessing how to prevent spills and track lost containers, and potentially setting up a fund for cleanup and compensation. Indigenous organizations must be consulted during the development of this strategy.
The strategy would include specific measures like preventing spills, improving communication with coastal communities, establishing a joint response task force, monitoring and removing lost containers, and funding research on plastic pollution. The Minister would report to Parliament on the strategy and its implementation progress annually.
